Understanding Pari-Mutuel Prizes

Most Division 1 prizes are pari-mutuel — shared equally among all winners. A $5M jackpot shared between two winners means $2.5M each. Fixed prizes (lower divisions) pay the same amount regardless of winner count.

Tax on Winnings

Australian lottery winnings are not subject to income tax. The full prize is yours. Winnings are considered a windfall, not regular income, and treated accordingly by the ATO.
